What is a 7Z file extension? Files with the extension.7z are compressed archive files created with 7-Zip open source software. These files are created using a compression method called LZMA, which is an algorithm for lossless data compression—a type of compression known for reducing file size while preserving quality.
All 7z files are file archives developed by 7-Zip and similar to other long-standing compressed archives like ZIP and RAR. They differ from these other formats mostly because of the algorithm used in file compression. Unlike the Unarchiver, however, Keka also features the ability to compress your own archives using the 7z, ZIP, TAR, Gzip, Bzip2, DMG and ISO formats. Keka can also compress larger files into several pieces, making them easier to share or store. Keka is available for free from the Keka website, but has a very small cost when purchasing from the Mac App Store. Keka requires Mac OS X 10.6.0 or later to run properly.

Originally a paid app, this utility is now available for free because it's no longer actively developed or updated. As such, this app's support in OS X may diminish over time, making the other apps potentially stronger candidates in the long run. Ez7z requires OS X 10.5.0 or later to run properly.

User experience
7-Zip can be used in two ways. The first option is to fire up the main program window and work with compressed files through the file manager. The second is to use the context menu, which gives you access to a key set of options by simply right-clicking on files.
7-Zip's file manager's interface is a little confusing. Unlike most compression tools, there's no option to create a new compressed archive and then add files to it. Instead, you have to begin by selecting the files and then then compress them.

7-Zip's various configurable settings are likely to be off-putting to a beginner. There's little, if anything, in the way of explanation for many of the options. That said, the default settings will work just fine for most people, and key options such as whether an archive should be password-protected or not are fairly self-explanatory.
A friendlier way to work with 7-Zip is to use the context menu. After you've selected one or more files in Windows, the right-click menu enables you to add them to a compressed archive in a few clicks. There are other options such as zipping files and adding them to an email which is a nice time-saver.
