.7z Unzip Program For Mac

.7z Unzip Program For Mac 6,6/10 9272 reviews

While Windows users can access 7z files by using the format's native decompression utility 7-Zip, the program lacks an official Mac release. Apple aficionados need not despair, however: The 7z format can be opened by a bevy of compression apps on OS X, most of which are free. In addition to decompressing these files, these apps can also compress files on your Mac into a 7z file, as well as opening other archive formats.

How to Open 7z and Other Archive Files on OS X Matt Klein August 24, 2015, 12:34pm EDT OS X has the built-in ability to handle ZIP archives, but for other archive types like RAR, Stuffit, and especially 7-Zip, you’ll need add-on software. The zip command included with Mac OS X does offer a way to encrypt zip files without using any third-party software. However, like the password-protection feature built into Windows XP, it uses the old and insecure standard zip encryption scheme. What is a 7Z file extension? Files with the extension.7z are compressed archive files created with 7-Zip open source software. These files are created using a compression method called LZMA, which is an algorithm for lossless data compression—a type of compression known for reducing file size while preserving quality.

All 7z files are file archives developed by 7-Zip and similar to other long-standing compressed archives like ZIP and RAR. They differ from these other formats mostly because of the algorithm used in file compression. Using this compression algorithm, large files like high-definition video can be dramatically reduced in size for easier sharing or long-term storage. Like other archive files, 7z files can also be encrypted with a password for additional security. The overall size of a 7z file depends primarily on the total amount of data contained with and the level of compression applied, although a 7z file will never be larger than the sum of its contents.

The Unarchiver

[The Unarchiver](http://unarchiver.c3.cx/) is a decompression utility developed for OS X by Dag Agren. Available in 18 languages, the Unarchiver is a lightweight app that can opens quite a few formats including 7z, ZIP, RAR and TAR. The Unarchiver is intended purely as a decompression tool and as such cannot create new archives, making it a little less useful for anyone who needs to compress their own 7z files in addition to opening them. The Unarchiver requires OS X 10.6.0 or later to run properly.

Keka

[Keka](http://www.kekaosx.com/en/) is a general-purpose compression utility developed by Jorge Garcia Armero. Like the Unarchiver, Keka can access and decompress 7z, ZIP, RAR and many other compressed archives. Unlike the Unarchiver, however, Keka also features the ability to compress your own archives using the 7z, ZIP, TAR, Gzip, Bzip2, DMG and ISO formats. Keka can also compress larger files into several pieces, making them easier to share or store. Keka is available for free from the Keka website, but has a very small cost when purchasing from the Mac App Store. Keka requires Mac OS X 10.6.0 or later to run properly.

Ez7z

[Ez7z](http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/19139/ez7z) is a general-purpose compression utility originally developed by Leif Heflin. Ez7z is a somewhat more limited app, only capable of decompressing 7z, ZIP, RAR, Bzip2 and TAR files. It can also compress files into 7z, ZIP, Bzip2, GZ and TAR archives. Originally a paid app, this utility is now available for free because it's no longer actively developed or updated. As such, this app's support in OS X may diminish over time, making the other apps potentially stronger candidates in the long run. Ez7z requires OS X 10.5.0 or later to run properly.

7-Zip's remit is simple: it compresses and decompresses files. With hard drives and SSDs now larger and cheaper than ever, you might well wonder just why such tools are still needed. Two key reasons are the internet (compressing files means they can be sent and received faster) and security (compressed files can be encrypted and password-protected).

7-Zip is free, fast and tiny. As well as the all-important Zip format, there's support for the creation of numerous other types of compressed file including 7z, BZIP2 and TAR.

Things are even more impressive when it comes to 7-Zip's decompression support; the list is seriously lengthy: AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VMDK, WIM, XAR and Z.

The fact that ZIP and RAR files are covered is reason enough to install 7-Zip right away – everything else is a bonus. Compression rates in the program's native format are particularly impressive.

If you need to be able to work with anything other than regular zip files, 7-Zip is ideal for the job. A tool that easily falls under the heading 'essential'.

User experience

7-Zip can be used in two ways. The first option is to fire up the main program window and work with compressed files through the file manager. The second is to use the context menu, which gives you access to a key set of options by simply right-clicking on files.

7-Zip's file manager's interface is a little confusing. Unlike most compression tools, there's no option to create a new compressed archive and then add files to it. Instead, you have to begin by selecting the files and then then compress them.

7-Zip's various configurable settings are likely to be off-putting to a beginner. There's little, if anything, in the way of explanation for many of the options. That said, the default settings will work just fine for most people, and key options such as whether an archive should be password-protected or not are fairly self-explanatory.

A friendlier way to work with 7-Zip is to use the context menu. After you've selected one or more files in Windows, the right-click menu enables you to add them to a compressed archive in a few clicks. There are other options such as zipping files and adding them to an email which is a nice time-saver.
